Kids Coloring Application
May 11, 2010
Mouse handling is one of the crucial part to acquire computer related
knowledge. Usually for kids, it starts with some mouse-driven drawing
application. Children draw arbitrary lines trying to control the
movements of mouse-pointer and clicking of the mouse buttons. It is
important to notice that accurate positioning and clicking is essential
to draw even a simple line.
I watched my 2 year old nephew drawing such arbitrary lines for almost
a week. For the first time users, especially children, it becomes
nearly impossible to control the mouse pointer on the screen. So I
thought, that before anything else, I should teach him to control the
pointer position on the screen. That was how, I designed a simple
coloring application with “easy to pick” colors and paint parts of a
pre-drawn picture. In the begining, I held his hands on mouse and
taught him to pick a color and click on a part of the picture to fill
that particular part with the selected color. A few days later, he was
able to pick up color and paint pre-drawn pictures on his own quite
accurately. He still draws arbitrarily, but now with more mouse
control. I am sure, he will master it soon.
